Professional Facilitator Training

GERI community workshop, Bonteheuwel, Cape Town

Last week, from 14-16 August, the second of the GERI community workshops was held in Bonteheuwel, Cape Town. A wonderful group of 19 women and men gathered together to jointly confront gender injustice in their community with compassion, courage and love. Through the Gender Equity and Reconciliation process, this courageous group spoke their truth, shared their pain and fears as a community and as individuals. The safe space created during the three days allowed us to witness and deeply listen to one another as we spoke from our hearts what we rarely share out loud. The workshop was process of healing. We discovered that a gender-healed world – where there is mutual respect and transformed relations between women and men – is possible.

During this Women’s Month in South Africa, where coverage of gangsterism, violence and crime in communities such as Bonteheuwel often overshadows the daily acts of gender injustice and disharmony residents experience it was important to bring this injustice “out into the light and confront it with the power of love”.

Thank you to you all for welcoming us into your community and for showing up with such courage and openness. Congratulations! With gratitude, from the facilitation team: Desireé English, Xolile Zulani, Zanele Khumalo and Lesley Thomas.
